Organised by the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) of the Cyprus Institute, the conference will be hosted in Limassol, Cyprus, under the auspices of the Municipality of Limassol.
This biennial conference is the flagship gathering of the MedCLIVAR Network, bringing together the community to advance a truly multidisciplinary understanding of Mediterranean climate evolution. It will address atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial components across time scales ranging from paleo reconstructions to future climate projections.
MedCLIVAR2026 will also serve as a forum for showcasing and advancing key Mediterranean-focused research and networking initiatives (including MedECC, MedEWSa, EMME-CARE, PREVENT, FutureMed, MEDUSSE, and more). The conference provides a unique platform to foster collaboration and exchange among these projects, strengthening synergies across the regional climate research community.
MedECC at MedCLIVAR 2026
MedECC will be strongly represented at the MedCLIVAR 2026 Conference. Several MedCLIVAR participants are also authors and contributors to MedECC assessments, strengthening the scientific links between the two networks.
On 22 September, Piero Lionello (University of Salento, Italy), MedECC co-coordinator, will deliver a keynote talk entitled “Long-term sea level rise adaptation pathways for Venice and Mediterranean coastal futures”, addressing long-term adaptation challenges for Mediterranean coastal areas.
The session “Climate adaptation strategies in the Mediterranean” will feature a presentation of the MedECC Expert Analysis “Environmental change, conflict and human migration in the Mediterranean Bassin”, delivered by its co-coordinator and MedECC Steering Committee member, Manfred Lange (Cyprus Institute, Cyprus).
This participation highlights the importance of bringing together climate science, environmental assessment and adaptation expertise to better understand and address the interconnected challenges facing the Mediterranean region.
