Roman Hoffmann
Roman Hoffmann leads the Migration and Sustainable Development Research Group at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria.
His research explores the interplay between climate change and population dynamics, and how these interactions shape sustainable development processes. In particular, he studies the drivers, patterns, and consequences of migration in the context of environmental change, as well as the resulting implications for origin and destination regions.
He is also engaged in research on health and well-being in the context of climate change and issues related to mitigation and sustainability, focusing on factors that influence environmental concern, pro-environmental behavior, and public support for climate action.
He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Vienna, Austria, and degrees in Sociology and Economics from the University of Munich, Germany.
Before joining IIASA, he held positions at the Vienna Institute of Demography, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the University of Vienna, the University of Munich, and the Bavarian State Institute for Higher Education Research and Planning.
He is an elected member of the Young Academy of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and active in several advisory boards and task forces, including as working group lead for The Lancet Regional Health – Europe Commission on Climate Change, Migration, Displacement and Health.
