MedECC contributes to strategic regional consultations on the New EU Pact for the Mediterranean

The IEMed and EuroMeSCo convene a two-day consultation on the New Pact for the Mediterranean in Cairo.

MedECC contributed to the two-day “Consultation Circles on the New EU Pact for the Mediterranean: Consulting Southern Partners”, organised by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and EuroMeSCo, in partnership with the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS), and hosted by the American University in Cairo (AUC).

On this occasion, MedECC was represented by Mohamed Abdrabo, Emeritus professor of environmental economics, Director of Alexandria Research Centre for Adaptation to Climate Change (ARCA) at Alexandria University. Mohamed was a Coordinating Lead Author of the Special Report Climate and environmental coastal risks in the Mediterranean, and has been recently appointed as co-coordinator of the Second Mediterranean Assesssment Report. Following a presentation on MedECC’s activities and key findings regarding climate and environmental risks in the region, Professor Abdrabo delivered a speech focusing on the economic impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean, with particular emphasis on the Middle East.

This consultation, offered a dedicated platform for structured dialogue with policymakers, think tankers, civil society actors, and private sector stakeholders from the Middle East. Focusing on three main dimensions that are vital to the region’s long-term development: fostering economic growth through trade, investment and engagement with the private sector; empowering the next generation by aligning skills with employment and mobility opportunities; and promoting sustainable transformation through decarbonised approaches to food systems, water management, and environmental resilience. By drawing on local knowledge, successful initiatives, and the experience of key actors, this consultation contributes directly to shaping a Pact that is grounded in the realities of the Southern Neighbourhood and designed to serve the aspirations of both shores of the Mediterranean.

Looking ahead, the present phase of the consultative process will continue with a final event, scheduled to take place in Brussels, on 11-12 June 2025, at which PAM will contribute by bringing forward the parliamentary dimension.
