There is a lot happening in the MedECC world right now, and we are glad to be sharing it with you. Work on the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2) continues to gain momentum: a call for experts is now underway, and new faces are joining the team, the Steering Committee, and the Advisory Board. The MedECC community is growing, and so is our collective ambition.

Call for experts: external review of the First Order Draft of the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2)
|
|
|
MAR2, scheduled for publication in 2028, will provide an updated synthesis of scientific knowledge on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean region, highlight key uncertainties, and identify remaining knowledge gaps. As with previous MedECC reports, MAR2 will be based on a rigorous assessment of the peer-reviewed scientific literature and will undergo a rigorous, iterative review process.

We invite researchers and experts from across the full range of scientific, technical, and socio-economic disciplines to apply as external reviewers. The call is open to PhD holders and other experts with demonstrated expertise in the thematic areas covered by the report. The report comprises seven chapters and approximately 500 pages; however, reviewers may focus on the chapters most relevant to their expertise. All contributing reviewers will be formally acknowledged in the final report.

MedECC is growing: new faces, new institutional bridges
|
|
|
|
Spring 2026 marks a significant moment for MedECC. Across its governance and secretariat, the network is welcoming four new members and two new officers, reflecting its commitment to strengthening Mediterranean science-policy dialogue ahead of an ambitious agenda, including the publication of the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2).

Two new members join the Steering Committee
|
|
|
|
Irem Daloglu Cetinkaya and Stefano Moncada have been appointed to the MedECC Steering Committee for an initial period of four years. Together, they bring expertise spanning climate change, social-ecological systems, water governance, development economics, island studies, and sustainable development: widening the range of perspectives that inform MedECC’s scientific assessments.

Two UNEP/MAP Regional Activity Centres join the Advisory Board
|
|
|
|
MedECC is also proud to welcome two new organisations to its Advisory Board both part of the UNEP/MAP system: CC/RAC (Climate Change Regional Activity Centre), represented by its Director, Levent Kuzu, and PAP/RAC (Priority Actions Programme Regional Activity Centre), represented by its Director, Daria Povh Škugor. Their membership marks an important step: extending MedECC’s reach and embedding its science deeper into regional policy processes.

The Secretariat expands with two new team Officers
|
|
|
|
Two new colleagues are joining to support the network’s scientific and communication work: Hélène Valentine Ferreira Martins as Administrative Officer and Pauline Simon as Communication Consultant. The MedECC Secretariat now counts four officers, bringing together complementary expertise to deliver on an ambitious workplan ahead of MAR2.

Piero Lionello will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming MedCLIVAR 2026 conference.
The 8th MedCLIVAR Conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus, from 21 to 25 September 2026, organised by the Cyprus Institute. This flagship gathering of the MedCLIVAR Network brings together climate experts from across the Mediterranean to explore atmospheric, marine and terrestrial dynamics.

Conference “Climate change and challenges in the Mediterranean: Water-energy-food-biodiversity”
On 25 June 2026 in Barjac, France, a public conference hosted by the TEECC association will explore climate change and its interconnected challenges in the Mediterranean: water, energy, food and biodiversity. Drawing on MedECC, IPCC and GREC-SUD findings, the event will address integrated adaptation solutions and the conditions needed to scale them up across governance, policy and society.

Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the European Union: Call for research projects on Climate Adaptation in the Mediterranean
|
Supporting 2 to 3 action-research projects at the intersection of humanities, social sciences, public policy and on-the-ground adaptation across southern Mediterranean countries. Priority themes include water, agriculture and food security, coastal areas and conflict-affected zones.
Deadline (expressions of interest): 3 July 2026.
