"Another MedECC newsletter to inform you on the progresses of our activities. Three long years have passed since the publication of MAR1, the first report of MedECC. The COVID crisis is now almost forgotten, but as the IPCC climatologists tell, the climate crisis has only just begun. The year 2023 presents a grim outlook of the future and yet, despite the strong words of the UN Secretary General, nothing is really moving to stop a predicted disaster. Catastrophes are occurring all over the world, but the Mediterranean Basin is bearing an important part of them. After a dry and burning summer (especially for the forests), September saw the arrival of torrential rains and flooding linked to soils made impermeable by these summer events and above all by the artificialization of the land. The worst was to come in Libya, where torrential rain collapsed two dams that had been poorly maintained because of conflicts that had been going on for over 12 years. MedECC has warned since its 2020 report that the Mediterranean Basin is a hotspot of multiple environmental and climatic risks. We are sounding the alarm, yet the efforts in terms of adaptation and mitigation are still not sufficient. This augurs well for the fact that current extreme events will be the normal situation in 20 years' time. MedECC is currently working on three special reports that will come out in 2024 and feature everything scientists know and that governments do not want to see. In these special reports, we are talking in particular about coastal risks and the interactions of climate change with conflicts and migrations. We associated with Plan Bleu to bring you the sixth edition of their webinars "Les Rendez-vous du Plan Bleu", Thursday 12 October, to analyze the risks associated with climate change and these recent extreme events that have occurred in the Mediterranean. We hope that our voice will be heard more loudly so that in the future we can avoid the thousands of deaths that occurred in the Mediterranean this summer."

Joël Guiot is a CNRS emeritus researcher at the European Centre for Research and Teaching in Environmental Geosciences (CEREGE, University of Aix-Marseille, France) and one of the coordinator of MedECC since its creation.

The MedECC is pleased to announce the call for experts to become a reviewer of the MedECC Special Report Environmental change, conflict and human migration. The external review is planned to start in October 2023 for a six-week period. The review is open to PhD holders and other experts with a solid experience in the fields covered by the report Deadline: 31 October 2023.

[French News] Un résumé pour tous du Premier rapport d'évaluation sur la Méditerranée a été publié en Juillet 2023 par le collectif Citoyens pour le Climat avec l'appui scientifique du MedECC. Ce document propose un résumé en langage courant des conclusions clés du rapport publié en 2020 par le MedECC.

The co-coordinator of the MedECC, Fatima Driouech (University Mohammed VI Polytechnic, Morocco), participated and hil highlighted the critical role of the MedECC network in briding the gap between science and policy, by providing the most updated scientific assessments of the risks related to climate and environmental changes.

|
|
|
|
On September 10-11, extreme floods killed several thousands in Libya, indicating the lack of action on climate change mitigation and adaptation. A few days earlier the storm killed at least 15 people in Türkiye, Greece and Bulgaria and inundated more than 75,000 hectares of land. MedECC distributed a PRESS RELEASE to renew its call for action.
