As COP31 approaches, this has been a busy and rewarding period for MedECC. Work on the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2) continues to move forward, and our network has been present at many events across the region and beyond. We are also pleased to announce the release of our expert analysis on environmental change, conflict and human migration, as well as MedECC Talks, a new series of nine videos giving voice to our experts.

MedECC Talk🎙️Meet the scientists exploring the future of the Mediterranean
MedECC Talk is a series of short conversations with scientists and experts working on climate and environmental change across the Mediterranean. What are the biggest risks facing the region? How is the Mediterranean changing? And what can science tell us about the future?
From climate change and sea-level rise to biodiversity, extreme events and adaptation, each episode brings you closer to the research, the people behind it, and the knowledge shaping our understanding of the Mediterranean:

What you might have missed
MedECC has released a new Expert Analysis exploring how environmental change, conflict and human migration intersect across the Mediterranean Basin.
Its goal is clear: to improve our common understanding of the drivers, trends, patterns and impacts of migration and displacement; and to help decision-makers develop policies that minimise human suffering, allocate resources effectively, and support regional stability and well-being. Our thanks go to to the 49 authors, 35 reviewers, and all those who contributed to this collective scientific effort, generously sharing their expertise and time. The science is available. Now, you can help us disseminate it to those who can act!

MAR2 reaches a key milestone
The drafting of the First Order Draft of the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2) is complete, and the external review closed in September. The response was strong: 98 reviews and 2540 comments came in from external experts. Led by 17 Coordinating Lead Authors and 52 Lead Authors from across the region, the report adopts an integrated approach. Spanning seven chapters, it combines natural sciences with an analysis of social issues, such as governance, inequality, migration, and conflict, in the context of climate and environmental risks. Further stages lie ahead, but this step marks significant progress toward the publication of MAR2.

Piero Lionello receives double honour: Lincei Membership and MedCLIVAR Lifetime Award
Piero Lionello, professor at the University of Salento, has been elected corresponding member of Italy’s Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the world’s oldest active scientific academy. In the same days, he received the MedCLIVAR Lifetime Leadership Award in Limassol, Cyprus, in recognition of his “visionary leadership” and service to Mediterranean climate research, including his chairmanship of MedCLIVAR from 2006 to 2025. MedECC is proud to count Piero as its one of coordinator and warmly congratulates him on this double honour.

A new publication on the Mediterranean Sea: a hotspot of environmental change
The Mediterranean Sea represents less than 1% of the global ocean surface, yet it hosts approximately 18% of all known marine species. Today, this exceptional ecosystem is facing growing environmental pressures. In a new publication co-authored by MedECC and Plan Bleu, we take stock of the environmental changes affecting the Mediterranean marine environment, their impacts on ecosystems and societies, and the solutions needed to strengthen its resilience.

The meeting aims to advance the development of the Second Order Draft (SOD) of the MAR2. Discussions will focus on the content of the different chapters. The meeting will also consider comments received during the external review, with the aim of finalising the SOD by the January 2027 deadline, while advancing work on the first draft of the Summary for Policymakers (SPM), based on the key messages and executive summaries from each chapter and the preparatory work completed prior to the meeting. The meeting is organised in partnership with the Maison Méditerranéenne du Climat, a leading platform for regional climate action in the Mediterranean, which emerged from the momentum of the MedCOP Climate conference held in Tangier in 2016 under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. It will also benefit from the support of the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University and the École Nationale de Commerce et de Gestion (ENCGT), as well as the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Region.

COP31 Türkiye Antalya 2026 UN Climate Change Conference
MedECC will be there, as a partner of the Mediterranean Pavilion, coordinated by the Union for the Mediterranean in the Blue Zone. As COP31 turns commitments into implementation, particularly on emission targets and implementation, adaptation and resilience, our experts will bring the latest scientific knowledge to decision-makers, drawing on findings from MedECC assessments, including the new report on environmental change, conflict and human migration.
