We share with you the update on the MedECC activities. Our work on MedECC Special Reports progresses. In between November 2022 and 15 December 2022 the outlines of these reports were shared with the representatives of governments, including: the UfM Climate Change Expert Group (CCEG) members, the United Nations Environmental Program / Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) and Plan Bleu Focal Points and the members of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MSCD). The MedECC Secretariat received 74 comments.
Moreover, the Zero Order Draft of the MedECC Special Report on environmental and climate coastal risks underwent in December 2022 the internal review by the authors of MedECC Special Reports. In total, 461 comments were provided by 15 reviewers. The First Order Draft, including the Summary for Policymakers, which will undergo the external review, is currently being prepared, and the call for external reviewers will be launched soon.

Solidarity with the colleagues and people of Türkiye and Syria
We are deeply affected by the current situation in Türkiye and Syria following two massive devastating earthquakes (7.8 and 7.5 Richter scale) that have struck these countries on 6 February 2023. The MedECC stands in solidarity with the hundreds of thoursands affected and impacted and we wish to express our thoughts to the people of the region and the relatives of the victims.
There is and will continue to be a need for increasing humanitarian assistance as the damage is extremely high. It is important through this difficult time to find collective ways to express our common humanity and to support those affected across the region. For those who can and would consider donate for relief efforts via official channels, please find below a list of organisations and initiatives in he region as trusted actors to support (not exhaustive):

During the event 'Solidarity with academic communities in Syria & Turkey: a panel discussion' organised by the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge (UK), the present Syrian academics highlighted their needs for capacity development and international collaboration. They are particularly interested in technical support around issues of disaster response, crisis research and trauma counselling. To learn more, please get in touch with: Kate Robertson, Middle East and Syria Programme Adviser, Cara (Council for At-Risk Academics), robertson@cara.ngo - and/or Dr. Shaher Abdullateef, Syrian Academic Expertise (regional), shaher.a@sae-afs.org.
