Dear Colleagues !We are happy to present you the first issue of the newsletter of the network of Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC). MedECC's objective is to gather, update and consolidate the best scientific knowledge about climate and environmental changes in the Mediterranean basin and render it accessible to policy-makers, key stakeholders and citizens. Our newsletter will be distributed on a quarterly basis. In the first part you will find the information concerning MedECC's activities and the second part will de dedicated to scientific news and publications ("scientific watch"). The Plan Bleu 2019 Report on the State of the Environment and Development (SoED 2019)Following an invitation by Plan Bleu (UNEP/MAP Regional Activity Center), MedECC have committed to contribute to their forthcoming Report on the State of the Environment and Development (SoED2019). Specifically, MedECC will coordinate a chapter on climate change and also contribute to selected sections of other chapters. Plan Bleu has a permanent mandate from UNEP/MAP to publish periodic assessment for informed police making and the SoED 2019 is a major output of the UNEP/MAP 2016-2021 Mid-Term Strategy. This report has a similar calendar to the MedECC report, with the adoption of the SoED 2019 planned for the end of 2019 during the Barcelona Convention Conference of Parties. MedECC and Plan Bleu collaborate closely, so that the two reports are complementary and coordinated. Read more

Work towards the IPCC Sixth Assessment ReportDuring the scoping of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, a proposal, made by the French and Spanish Government, was approved to include a “Cross Chapter Paper” on the Mediterranean Basin into the report of Working Group II. WG2 “assesses the vulnerability of socio-economic and natural systems to climate change, negative and positive consequences of climate change, and options for adapting to it”. Wolfgang Cramer, the MedECC coordinator, has been asked to coordinate this cross chapter paper, several MedECC colleagues are already on the list, and we will aim to include a few more contributors. Work will start at the first authors meeting in January 2019. An “internal draft” is due on 26.4.2019, a first order draft on 7.10.2019, a second order draft on 10.7.2020 and the final government draft on 28.5.2021. The approval of the report is planned for October 2021. It will be an excellent opportunity for MedECC results to mature further and also reach a broader audience.
