The past months have been a period of intense collaboration and progress for MedECC, as we work to shape the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2). With the draft outline now completed, key themes defined, and authors appointed, MAR2 is ready to enter its drafting phase.
In this issue, we also share the new outputs from our Special Reports on coastal risks, and climate WEFE nexus, and highlight recent scientific news and initiatives from the Mediterranean region.

MedECC receives EU support
MedECC is pleased to announce that it has received financial support from the European Union, through a contract coordinated by the Directorate-General for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf (DG MENA) and implemented via Plan Bleu/RAC, which hosts the MedECC Secretariat. The agreement provides multiyear funding to support the preparation of the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report.

The Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2) follows the First Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR1) published by the MedECC in 2020, which assessed key risks from climate and environmental change. It also builds on subsequent Special Reports addressing emerging issues on coastal risks and on the climate climate WEFE nexus.

MAR2 next step: from scoping to drafting
After completing the scoping phase, during which the outline was prepared and authors were nominated, MAR2 is now entering the drafting phase. Authors will review the latest relevant literature and prepare the first internal draft of the report, for review by authors and coordinators in early 2026.

Mediterranean Coast Day 2025: a call to action for coastal resilience
On 25 September, Mediterranean Coast Day 2025 brought together citizens, experts, and communities to celebrate the Mediterranean coast and call for urgent action to strengthen coastal resilience. The event inspired solutions, raised awareness, and promoted lasting action.
This year, the spotlight was on those who drive meaningful change across the Mediterranean. MedECC is proud to be featured in the 2025 Mediterranean Coast Day storymap, showcasing our activities, and our latest report on coastal risks, providing policymakers and stakeholders with evidence‑based guidance for resilience and adaptation planning.

What climate change means for the Mediterranean Sea? A GEOMAR study builds on MedECC MAR1
A new scientific study, led by GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, evaluates climate risks to Mediterranean marine and coastal ecosystems, focusing on warming, acidification, and sea level rise. The study also draws on MAR1, and finds these ecosystems face higher risks than the global average, with coastal habitats particularly vulnerable even under moderate warming scenarios.
