We are delighted to announce that the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the MedECC Special Report “Interlinking climate change with water-energy-food-ecosystems (WEFE) nexus in the Mediterranean Basin” has been approved during the Plenary Consultation held on 29 April 2024. This marks a substantial leap forward in the finalisation of the report. Stay tuned for the upcoming publication!

We are also very pleased to welcome a new coordinator, Anna Pirani, a senior research associate of the CMCC research division ‘Risk assessment and adaptation strategies’ (Italy). She is working on international, European, national and local climate risk assessment and climate policies, in particular adaptation. She is a member of the support and analysis team of the Italian delegation for UNFCCC negotiations, in particular for adaptation. Her extensive expertise in political science will bring invaluable insights and contributions to MedECC, enhancing our efforts to bridge science and policy effectively.

Key insights from the MedECC Plenary Consultation on the Special Report on climate change and WEFE nexus
|
The approval process for MedECC Summary for Policymakers (SPM) is a crucial step in ensuring their accuracy, scientific robustness, and accessibility and usefulness to policymakers and stakeholders. The Plenary Consultation on the SPM of the MedECC Special Report on “Interlinking climate change with water – energy – food – ecosystems (WEFE) nexus in the Mediterranean Basin” took place online on 29 April.

The Plenary culminated in the agreement of the “Conclusion and Recommendations”, which confirmed that there were no factual inaccuracies in the SPM. It also urged stakeholders to take concrete steps to address the issues in their policies, reinforce dialogue, and create platforms for open discussions and awareness to ensure better understanding and implementation of the SPM's issues.

9th “Our Ocean Conference'', Athens, Greece, 15-17 April 2024

|
The Conference served as an important platform for showcasing MedECC's network and its activities. Anna Pirani (CMCC, Italy), co-coordinator of MedECC, delivered a compelling presentation highlighting the objectives of MedECC and the ocean-related findings of the MedECC reports.

Union for the Mediterranean Green Week, Istanbul, Türkiye, 14-16 May 2024
|
|
|
MedECC recently participated in the first edition of the Mediterranean Green Week, focusing on environmental, energy, and climate challenges in the region. The participation included two sessions on the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems Nexus, and another on the Science–Policy Interface, joined respectively by Mohamed Abdel Monem (FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa, Egypt), co-coordinator of the WEFE nexus report, and Piero Lionello (University of Salento, Italy), co-coordinator of the Coastal risks report. They both highlighted the collaborative efforts of MedECC to contribute to evidence-based policymaking.

NEXUSNET Cost Action, 2nd Regional Stakeholders Forum, Malta, 14 May 2024
|
|
|
The 2nd Regional Stakeholders Forum on Resource Recovery and Reuse in the Water-Energy-Food Nexus for a Low-Carbon Economy aimed at exploring the dynamic intersection of resource recovery and reuse within the framework of a the WEF-Nexus implementation into practice. During this event Maria P. Papadopoulou (National Technical University of Athens, Greece), Coordinating Lead Author of the Special Report on the WEFE nexus introduced the report to the representatives from 25 countries in Europe present at the meeting.

Téthys Network General Assembly, Madrid, Spain, 22-24 May, 2024
|
|
|
During the General Assembly of the Téthys Network, Wolfgang Cramer (CNRS, IMBE, France), one of the MedECC coordinators, shared key insights on climate change and its impacts on the Mediterranean region. His talk underscored the critical role of Mediterranean universities in leading the transition to sustainable development through research, teaching, and collaboration. This event, held in collaboration with Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), highlighted the strategic importance of the Téthys Network, which consists of 81 universities from 20 countries.

MED-Amin network hosts strategic meeting in Tirana, Albania, focusing on climate change and food security, 29-30 May 2024
|
|
|
The MED-Amin network held its strategic annual meeting on May 29-30 in Tirana, Albania. Philippe Drobinski (LMD-IPSL & E4C center, France), Report co-coordinator of the WEFE-nexus Special Report, presented key insights on climate change in the Mediterranean from the MedECC and IPCC (AR6) reports. Discussions focused on emerging risks for cereal markets and the impacts of climate change, emphasising the need for best practices and enhanced scientific collaboration.

Workshop under the Protocol on Water and Health hosted by Portugal, 4-5 June, 2024
|
|
|
MedECC participated in the workshop on enhancing the climate resilience of the water and sanitation sector in the Mediterranean region, hosted by Portugal and co-organized by UNECE and WHO/Europe in the framework of the Protocol on Water and Health. It was an excellent opportunity for us to share our activities and results from MAR1 and the latest updates from the Special Report on the WEFE nexus, represented by the Coordinating Lead Author Margarita García-Vila (Spanish National Research Council - Institute for Sustainable Agriculture), Coordinating Lead Author of the Special Report on the WEFE nexus.

MedECC is honored to have its First Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR1) mentioned by Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, during his keynote speech at the UN Security Council on April 17-18, 2024, in New York, USA.

MedCLIVAR network and MedCLIVAR-SISC Conference
|
MedCLIVAR serves as a scientific network to promote better communication among different scientific disciplines and to develop a multidisciplinary vision of the evolution of the Mediterranean climate through studies that integrate atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial climate components at time scales ranging from paleo-reconstructions to future climate scenarios. MedCLIVAR has contributed to scientific progress, new scientific synthesis, the education of a new generation of scientists, and the promotion of awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of regional climate change. The MedCLIVAR Network and the Italian Society for Climate Sciences (SISC) are delighted to invite you to participate in the MedCLIVAR-SISC 2024 Conference from 24 to 27 September 2024 at the University of Salento, Lecce, Italy. The conference aims to develop a multidisciplinary vision of the Mediterranean climate evolution, with studies of atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial climate components at time scales ranging from paleo-reconstructions to future climate scenarios.

Plan Bleu: Call for papers
Plan Bleu (Regional Activity Centre of Mediterranean Action Plan, Marseille, France) launched a Call for Papers on "Environmentally Friendly Economic Tools and Finances : The Path Towards Sustainability in the Mediterranean". Candidate authors are invited to delve into the intricacies of successful economic/financial tools by submitting their proposals, offering evidence-based analyses and pragmatic policy recommendations.

The MedECC scientific watch brings you a selection of studies focusing on the risks related to climate and environmental challenges in the Mediterranean region. Some of these papers include comprehensive global data analyses, including the Mediterranean region and providing valuable insights into its environmental context. Other studies address crucial or emergent studies, like the impact of extreme climate events on mental health.
