It has been a while since we sent out the MedECC newsletter. It is a great pleasure for us to get back to you with the news of the MedECC. The most prominent news of the last months is that the MedECC contributed to the Mediterranean Pavilion at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022, COP27, in Egypt (6-18 November 2022). MedECC organised two side-events and MedECC's members took part in partners' events. In this context several media releases have been published.

As for the everyday work, MedECC continues its intensive work on the preparation of three Special Reports on:

- climate and environmental coastal risks,
|
- climate-food-water-energy-ecosystems nexus,
|
- environmental change, conflict and human migration.

The MedECC has actively participated at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022 COP 27 ( 6-18 Nov, 2022, Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt) as a partner of the Mediterranean Pavilion.

A cooperative framework to strengthen area-based nature conservation actions After three years of action, the Interreg Med Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Community (MBPC) project held its final event between the 2nd-4th November 2022.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
In the lead-up to the COP27 in Egypt, the Med Dialogues +2030 organised a conference to highlight the human security implications of climate change in the Mediterranean, thus making the case for increased commitments and accelerated actions against climate change to be taken at the COP27.
|
|
|
|
|
|
In 2022, the Plan Bleu aims to go further in raising awareness for the protection of the Mediterranean by organising regular online meetings. The third edition put the focus on coastal risks and MedECC contributed to it.

|
|
|
|
MedECC took part to the 31th edition of the French Science Festival dedicated to Climate Change! MedECC Coordinators and Secretariat participated in conferences and workshops.

|
MedECC is proud to share the news that Dr. María Carmen Llasat, Professor at the Universitat de Barcelona and member of MedECC, has received the "Creus de Sant Jordi" (‘Crosses of Saint George’) on Monday, July 11 2022.

The MedECC’s present work focuses on three special reports that are being prepared during 2021-2023 period. The Coordinating Lead Authors meeting was held in Barcelona (Spain) in June 2022.

|
|
|
The secretariats of the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) and Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED) hold a meeting in May 2022 to prepare the COP 27 of UNFCCC.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Fatima Driouech, co-coordinator of MedECC, participated in the round table during the workshop “Adapting coastal cities to sea level rise in the Mediterranean region” in April 2022.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
MedECC has participated in the 3rd Union for Mediterranean (UfM) Working Group Meeting on Environment and Climate Action, that took place online on the 14 & 15 of March 2022.

MedECC's CONTRIBUTIONS AND PUBLICATIONS

The report "Adapting Coastal Cities and Territories to Sea Level Rise in the Mediterranean Region - Challenges and Best Practices" published with the support of the City of Marseille, Plan Bleu and MedECC.
|

|
|
|
|
|
MapX is the cartographic component of the World Environment Situation Room (WESR), an online and digital platform developed by UNEP/GRID-Geneva and UN Environment for managing geospatial data on natural resources. Plan Bleu has developed a dedicated project to the Mediterranean region, the “WESR: Mediterranean”. The atlas of maps of seasonal temperature and precipitation changes produced by MedECC was published in MapX.

MedECC and Nigel Hawtin have developped a serie of 5 new infographics to present and highlight specific risks associated with climate and environmental changes in the Mediterranean Basin. They are based on data of the First Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR1) published in November 2020.

Planet Med is the first podcast dedicated to saving the Mediterranean and produced by Plan Bleu. Wolfgang Cramer, the MedECC co-coordinator participated to the episode explaining how the Mediterranean is the site of extreme climatic events.

SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES AND REPORTS
|

|
|
A new paper, "Ocean acidification research in the Mediterranean Sea: Status, trends and next steps", has just been published. It analyzes the acidification trends in the Mediterranean Sea, the future projections, the impacts on marine organisms and ecosystems’ services, and the policy-governance of ocean acidification.

|
|
|
|
An international team of researchers has published the first study assessing the effects of mass mortalities on a Mediterranean scale over five consecutive years. In total, more than 30 research groups from 11 countries, led by the Institut de Ciencies del Mar (ICM-CSIC) have participated to this study.

|
|
A new book examines the multidimensional relationship between climate change and security across Mediterranean Basin. It is specifically underscoring the key social, political and economic challenges of the present climate emergency and outlining possible cooperative avenues to mitigate its most adverse effects.

The new scientific paper "Global warming is shifting the relationships between fire weather and realized fire-induced CO2 emissions in Europe" report a historic change in the European fire regime driven by climate change, the more intense in the Mediterranean area.

A new report "Climate Change and Weather Extremes in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East" published in the journal Reviews of Geophysics, provides an updated, comprehensive assessment of the impacts of climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region.

|
The Health and Climate Change Country Profiles, developed in collaboration with national governments, are part of WHO’s monitoring of health sector response to climate change. The profiles summarize evidence of the climate hazards and health risks facing countries.

This paper adresses current knowledge on the marine mercury cycle and relevant Mediterranean-specific features and presents an updated budget of Hg cycles including emissions, the geographical distribution in the waters and in the sediments of the Mediterranean Sea.

A new study provides a comprehensively analysis of Marine Heat Waves (MHWs) in the Mediterranean Sea at sub-regional scale from surface to sub-surface and from open ocean to coastal near-shore waters, using remote sensing and multi-platform in situ observations.

|
A new paper presents an overview of existing infrastructure to monitor sea level in the Mediterranean and Black seas. These stations are essential to monitor and study sea level variations that pose a hazard in these basins, such as storm surges, tsunamis, meteotsunamis and sea level rise.
