MedECC scoping workshop in Aix-en-Provence (France), October 2016

The MedECC scoping workshop took place in Aix-en-Provence (La Baume-les-Aix), France on October 10-12, 2016.

The goal was to produce a detailed outline of the first MedECC report on climate and environmental change issues of importance for policymakers in our region (publication is planned for the end of 2018). This event received the COP22 label.

There was 68 participants from 16 countries (50 researchers and 18 representatives of socio-economic world). Special effort was put to assure balanced geographic and scientific representation.

Coordination : Labex OT-Med, Plan Bleu.

Financial support : Plan Bleu, Principality of Monaco, ADEME, Labex OT-Med, Métropole Aix-Marseille Provence.

During this workshop an outline for a possible first assessment report was developed covering the following topics:

  1. The climatic, environmental and socio-economic drivers of current environmental change in the region
  2. The environmental challenges for society, such as the current trends, impacts, policies, solutions, knowledge gaps and the needs for research and observations. The main challenges include: water, energy, food, ecosystems/ecosystem services, develop-ment, human health and human security
  3. Solutions and opportunities, with case studies, best practice examples, finance
  4. Mediterranean cooperation as a solution
  5. Education and capacity building
